Maryland Essentials for Childhood was created in 2014, but the stepping stones to this collective impact initiative began taking shape decades earlier.

1974
Child Abuse Prevention & Treatment Act (CAPTA) enacted into Federal law.

1999
State Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (SCCAN) established by the Maryland General Assembly.

2006
SCCAN creates the Prevention Workgroup.

2007-2009
SCCAN’s Prevention Workgroup team participates in The PREVENT Child Maltreatment Institute funded by the Doris Duke Foundation and the CDC.

2012
SCCAN adopts CDC Essentials for Childhood goals to direct its work.

2014
SCCAN Prevention Committee expands and becomes Maryland Essentials for Childhood. SCCAN and The Family Tree agree to serve as backbone organizations.

2015
Maryland begins collecting ACEs data in its Behavioral Risk Factor Survey.

2017
Maryland’s ACE Interface Project initiated.

2018
Maryland begins collecting PACEs data in its Youth Risk Behavior Survey/Youth Tobacco Survey.

2019
Maryland Essentials for Childhood hosts the ACEs Roundtable for the Maryland General Assembly Members.

2020
Achieving Racial Equity Workgroup and Childhood Resilience Action Team formed.

2020-2021
SCCAN and other state agency partners participate in the National Governors Association’s ACEs State Learning Collaborative.

2021
Governor issues ACEs Executive Order and the General Assembly establishes the Maryland Trauma-Informed Care Commission.

2022
The Maryland Information Network, which powers 211 Maryland, joins The Family Tree and SCCAN as a backbone organization.

2024
Maryland Essentials for Childhood rebrands and launches new Brain-Building Toolkit.
